Depth!

This started with an honestly simple thought: "what if the ends of the line segment were a different color, to give it more of a this-is-a-streak unfocused effect?"

...even using PICO-8's extended palette, picking three colors instead of two honestly proved quite tricky? Creating sufficient contrast between two colors is something we've already worked out how to do, but figuring out an intermediate color that is:

• an intermediate level of brightness,
• an appropriate color and (de)saturation, but
• still leaves things looking like rain and not, say, welding sparks

was a challenge.

...but a surmountable one!

Anyway, once we added different-colored line segment tails, it occurred to us that we could create some variation in length and intensity, and then it occurred to us that we could have some drops that are completely faded into the background to create a strong sense of "some drops are far away". And then we had to revise the color palette again. And then it worked!
